Supervisors play a critical role in maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.
By understanding their responsibilities, staying informed about hazards, and enforcing safety measures, they help create a safer, more productive work environment. Employers must support supervisors in meeting their obligations by providing ongoing training, resources, and a commitment to safety at all levels of the organization.
Under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), supervisors have specific responsibilities to protect workers from hazards, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and promote a strong safety culture.
Our Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness program equips supervisors with the knowledge and tools necessary to fulfill their legal duties and create a safer work environment.
Training Includes:
- An overview of the OHSA and key safety regulations
- Guidance on recognizing and managing workplace hazards
- The Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and its role in workplace safety
- Strategies for effective safety communication and enforcement
Learning Objectives
- Explain the health and safety responsibilities associated with the supervisory role.
- Describe how supervisors fit into the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and how employers, supervisors, and workers collaborate to maintain a safe and healthy workplace.
- Apply the Recognize, Assess, Control, and Evaluate (RACE) framework to identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
- Identify sources of occupational health and safety information within their province or territory, including workplace health and safety policies and procedures, safety data sheets (SDSs), operating manuals, recommendations from the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC), and guidance from the company’s Health and Safety Representative.
- Demonstrate effective leadership in workplace safety by modelling safe behaviours and reinforcing the importance of adhering to workplace health and safety policies and procedures.

The Supervisor’s Role in Workplace Safety
- Setting a Positive Example: Supervisors must model safe behaviours and encourage a proactive approach to workplace safety.
- Encouraging Open Communication: Workers should feel comfortable reporting hazards or safety concerns without fear of reprisal.
- Monitoring Compliance: Supervisors must regularly check that workers are using protective equipment, following procedures, and adhering to workplace policies.
- Participating in Safety Programs: Involvement in safety committees, training sessions, and risk assessments strengthens workplace safety efforts.
